How do you minimize finger dents when you’re sculpting polymer clay? Place it somewhere where the details are minimal so it will be easier to take out and fix it later if needed. If you don’t want to use wire, then you can also use extra clay to make a handle instead. Take it out when you’re ready and smooth the hole(s) before baking. You can also create a little loop out of armature wire, stick it in the clay, and use it as a handle. Something as simple as a plate turned upside down that you manually move in circles works just fine for a smaller piece. This is the easiest way to get a smooth, dust, and fingerprint-free surface.Īvoid touching the parts you’re not currently working on. Use well-fitting gloves when you sculpt, like a pair of nitrile exam gloves. How do you keep fingerprints off of unbaked polymer clay? Smooth out the remaining unevenness using another method, like sanding, if necessary. You can still smooth baked clay that has visible fingerprints by sanding it using various grits of sandpaper.Īdditionally, you can use a scalpel or X-Acto knife to carefully peel away the top layer if the fingerprint is too deep. If you prefer to keep chemicals out of your workspace, then you don’t have to use acetone to remove imperfections. Do you have to use acetone to remove fingerprints from baked polymer clay? Like isopropyl alcohol, acetone is also best used on single-colored projects. Doing so risks damaging the surface and losing the fine details. To use the acetone, dip the cotton bud in the liquid so that it’s moist (but not dripping), then gently wipe it over the parts of the baked clay that you want to smooth.ĭon’t press down on the clay, or attempt to vigorously rub the fingerprints out. It is a toxic chemical that not only has strong fumes but it is also highly flammable. If you choose to use acetone, do so cautiously at your own risk. It works by melting the plastic, which makes it smooth again. It’s possible to use a cotton bud dipped in 100% acetone to remove fingerprints and other imperfections from baked polymer clay. Can you remove fingerprints from polymer clay that has been baked? You can do this by dipping your finger in some cornstarch or baby powder, then lightly rubbing the clay with circular motions. If you use this technique on a multi-colored object to smooth the fingerprints, then you will end up with smudged patterns.Īfter the fingerprints have been removed using the rubbing alcohol, focus on smoothing the surface again. Keep in mind that rubbing alcohol is best used on single-colors. Use the moistened cotton bud to lightly wipe away the imperfections on the clay. Higher concentrations, like 91% isopropyl alcohol, will work better. To easily remove fingerprints from clay that has not yet been baked, all you need is a Q-tip and a few drops of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). That being said, if you learn how to avoid leaving marks on the clay altogether your workflow will improve! The task is much easier to accomplish at this time. It’s best to remove fingerprints from the clay before you bake the project. How do you remove fingerprints from soft polymer clay? Instead, it’s best to minimize the imperfections while the clay is still soft prior to baking. Keep in mind that once your project is baked, it becomes more difficult to add clay back to it if you end up removing too much while trying to correct mistakes. Any large scratches, grooves, or dents will be difficult to remove. Minor imperfections are easier to get rid of after baking, but this is the case only if there aren’t major ones visible. Treat the after baking state as a time for polishing rather than a time to fix things. Is it easier to smooth polymer clay before or after baking?Īim for making the surface as smooth as possible before baking your project. You will exert more effort trying to clean up a baked piece of clay. However, it’s best to avoid leaving them in the first place or attempt to remove them from the surface prior to baking. Most imperfections, like small scratches and fingerprints, can be removed from the polymer clay before and after baking. One of the most frustrating aspects of learning how to work with polymer clay is figuring out how to remove imperfections from your projects. ![]() ![]() Dope Basic Science, Clinical, & Anatomy. On the other side it’s fun to answer cards fast one by one, because the content per card is narrow and clear.Īnd don’t use anki when your exams are pretty close.Clinical Submissions Only Getting StartedĪ offers comprehensive, update-to-date guides, videos, and personalized help for everything related to Anki. ![]() Try it out and you feel exhausted pretty much. River sediment can be either a sink or a source of greenhouse gases, which varies in different levels of pollution and different seasons. The main influencing factor for CO 2 and N 2O diffusive fluxes was the water temperature of the overlying water however, the key factors for CH 4 diffusive fluxes were the Eh of the sediment and the NH 4 +-N of the overlying water. There were positive correlations among the CO 2, CH 4 and N 2O diffusive fluxes. On average for the whole year, the river sediment was the sink of CO 2 and the source of CH 4 and N 2O. As a general rule, the more serious the river pollution was, the greater the diffusive fluxes of the greenhouse gases were. The spatial variation of the N 2O diffusive fluxes in the sewage-draining rivers and the natural rivers was the most significant. The annual mean values of the CO 2, CH 4 and N 2O diffusive fluxes at the sewage-draining river sediment–water interface were − 123.26 ± 233.78 μmol m −2 h −1, 1.88 ± 6.89 μmol m −2 h −.03 ± 2388.46 nmol m −2 h −1, respectively, which were 1.22, 4.37 and 134.50 times those at the natural river sediment–water interface, respectively. The mean absolute value of the CO 2 diffusive fluxes was seasonally variable with spring>winter>fall>summer, while the mean absolute values of the CH 4 and N 2O diffusive fluxes were both higher in summer and winter, and lower in fall and spring. The greenhouse gas diffusive fluxes at the sediment–water interface exhibited obvious spatiotemporal variations. Sewage-draining rivers were more seriously polluted by human sewage discharge than natural rivers. The influence of environmental variables on greenhouse gas diffusive fluxes was evaluated by Spearman’s correlation analysis and a multiple stepwise regression analysis. Greenhouse gas diffusive fluxes at the sediment–water interface of rivers in Tianjin city (Haihe watershed) were investigated during July and October 2014, and January and April 2015 by laboratory incubation experiments. The purposes of this study were to analyse the spatiotemporal variations in greenhouse gas diffusive fluxes at the sediment–water interface of sewage-draining rivers and natural rivers, and investigate the factors responsible for the changes in greenhouse gas diffusive fluxes. ![]() ![]() ![]() Novak Djokovic (2) - 8 a.m."What a quality in the end of the match. If you start bending your elbows more and more as you pull the weight over your head, you’ll be using your triceps and biceps more than your lats to move the weight. Lastly, remember that your elbows should always be slightly bent but this angle should never change throughout the range of motion. It should be noted that you will also engage the serratus anterior, triceps and teres major as well. Because of the positioning of the exercise you will be able to OVERLOAD your lats with more weight during the stretch. So really try to let your hips sink below the surface of the bench.Īs for muscles involved, the primary movers are the pec major and pec minor, but the stretch on the lats during peak contraction, or bottom of the movement is what leads a lot of people to incorporate this exercise on back day. In fact, I’ve actually made videos in the past discussing how to use this exercise for chest or lats so if you want to dive a bit deeper into that subject, you can watch that video below.īut why does the starting position change which muscles are targeted with the exercise? Well, it’s because you are able to dip your hips and extend your lower back a lot more this way, which will allow you to get a better stretch and contraction on the lats. So if you are trying to isolate more LATS, you would want to use the second starting position and also focus on pulling with your elbows, keeping your biceps and grip disengaged as much as you can without dropping the weight. However, the dumbbell pull-over is very unique in that it can be used to target CHEST or BACK and your starting position is going to help in determining this. The first is by lying flat on a bench, and the second is by lying off the side of the bench with just your upper back on the pad. This exercise can be executed in two different laying positions. The teres major is a small muscle that spans from the bottom of your shoulder blade to the side of your arm and helps extend the shoulder and the triceps help bring your arms down aiding your lats. The posterior deltoid is on the back of the shoulder and helps pull your arm down and back during the movement. The lats are responsible for extending and medially rotating the upper arms in toward your body. Now this exercise primarily target the lats, posterior deltoid, teres major and triceps. Also, don’t grab the bar too wide because this will reduce the overall range of motion restricting the effectiveness of the movement. Make sure you’re bracing your abs throughout the entire set, and don’t bend your elbows more than just slightly. Then return to the starting position while controlling the negative and repeat.īut here are some other key notes. Once in place, push the bar towards your hips WITHOUT changing the angle of your elbows and as the bar reaches your thighs continue to stick your chest out and FLEX your back. Next, while maintaining a slight bend in your elbows, bend your knees, keep your chest up and arch your back to create as much of a stretch as possible on your lats. You then step a few feet away from the machine so that even in the starting position there’s constant tension on your back. To perform a lat pushdown you need access to a cable machine and a straight bar attachment. So to properly answer that question, we first need to talk about the differences between the two exercises. ![]() Essentially, he was asking which exercise would produce the most gains or a bigger and thicker back and now that brings us here. ![]() ![]() The subscripts refer to the number of atoms (including the hydrogen) in the closed loop formed by the hydrogen bond. The α-helix can be described as a 3.6 13 helix, since the i + 4 spacing adds three more atoms to the H-bonded loop compared to the tighter 3 10 helix, and on average, 3.6 amino acids are involved in one ring of α-helix. Similar structures include the 3 10 helix ( i + 3 → i hydrogen bonding) and the π-helix ( i + 5 → i hydrogen bonding). Contrast of helix end views between α (offset squarish) vs 3 10 (triangular) The α-helices can be identified in protein structure using several computational methods, one of which is DSSP (Define Secondary Structure of Protein). Official international nomenclature specifies two ways of defining α-helices, rule 6.2 in terms of repeating φ, ψ torsion angles (see below) and rule 6.3 in terms of the combined pattern of pitch and hydrogen bonding. What is most important is that the N-H group of an amino acid forms a hydrogen bond with the C=O group of the amino acid four residues earlier this repeated i + 4 → i hydrogen bonding is the most prominent characteristic of an α-helix. The pitch of the alpha-helix (the vertical distance between consecutive turns of the helix) is 5.4 Å (0.54 nm), which is the product of 1.5 and 3.6. Short pieces of left-handed helix sometimes occur with a large content of achiral glycine amino acids, but are unfavorable for the other normal, biological L-amino acids. Dunitz describes how Pauling's first article on the theme in fact shows a left-handed helix, the enantiomer of the true structure. The amino acids in an α-helix are arranged in a right-handed helical structure where each amino acid residue corresponds to a 100° turn in the helix (i.e., the helix has 3.6 residues per turn), and a translation of 1.5 Å (0.15 nm) along the helical axis. In 1954, Pauling was awarded his first Nobel Prize "for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances" (such as proteins), prominently including the structure of the α-helix. Pauling then worked with Corey and Branson to confirm his model before publication. After a few attempts, he produced a model with physically plausible hydrogen bonds. ![]() Being bored, he drew a polypeptide chain of roughly correct dimensions on a strip of paper and folded it into a helix, being careful to maintain the planar peptide bonds. The pivotal moment came in the early spring of 1948, when Pauling caught a cold and went to bed. ![]() Two key developments in the modeling of the modern α-helix were: the correct bond geometry, thanks to the crystal structure determinations of amino acids and peptides and Pauling's prediction of planar peptide bonds and his relinquishing of the assumption of an integral number of residues per turn of the helix. Taylor, Maurice Huggins and Bragg and collaborators to propose models of keratin that somewhat resemble the modern α-helix. Neurath's paper and Astbury's data inspired H. Hans Neurath was the first to show that Astbury's models could not be correct in detail, because they involved clashes of atoms. the stretching caused the helix to uncoil, forming an extended state (which he called the β-form).Īlthough incorrect in their details, Astbury's models of these forms were correct in essence and correspond to modern elements of secondary structure, the α-helix and the β-strand (Astbury's nomenclature was kept), which were developed by Linus Pauling, Robert Corey and Herman Branson in 1951 (see below) that paper showed both right- and left-handed helices, although in 1960 the crystal structure of myoglobin showed that the right-handed form is the common one.the unstretched protein molecules formed a helix (which he called the α-form).He later joined other researchers (notably the American chemist Maurice Huggins) in proposing that: The data suggested that the unstretched fibers had a coiled molecular structure with a characteristic repeat of ≈5.1 ångströms (0.51 nanometres).Īstbury initially proposed a linked-chain structure for the fibers. In the early 1930s, William Astbury showed that there were drastic changes in the X-ray fiber diffraction of moist wool or hair fibers upon significant stretching. Four carbonyl groups are pointing upwards toward the viewer, spaced roughly 100° apart on the circle, corresponding to 3.6 amino-acid residues per turn of the helix. ![]() |
